MH17 and the Sunflower

I know its not much comfort but some years back I planted a sunflower seed on my balcony when I was living in Queanbeyan in 2005. Of all the flowers I grew it had a character of its own and rich colour which at the time I thought was fabulous.

I was just reflecting back to when I grew my sunflower seed after seeing footage of the large sunflower fields where searches for bodies from MH17 are being carried out, and thought of how the green and gold colours have that Australian connection.

On Anzac Day we remember the fallen with the red poppy flower (Flanders Poppy) to which in similar significance I wonder whether the sunflower could be used in remembering those who have lost their lives associated with MH17. The other sad connection is that the area where MH17 came down is in a battle field (warzone) in Ukraine.

It’s just such a tragedy for so many around the world to see the ugliness of mankind toward each other, and yet in nature we have such beauty such as the sunflower in comparison.

My sympathies go out to those grieving the loss of their loved ones from MH-17…RIP.
